Minimal Access Surgery Unit

HISTORY

The Minimal Access Surgery Department is functioning at Madras Medical College & Rajiv Gandhi Govt. General Hospital, Chennai since September 2013 and was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Health Minister Dr. C. Vijaya Baskar and Health Secretary, Dr.J.Radhakrishnan IAS along with the Skill Training Lab.

TamilNadu is the First State in India to have a Separate Minimal Access Surgery Department next only to the Central Government run All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

The Minimal Access Surgery Department at Madras Medical College & Rajiv Gandhi Govt. General Hospital, Chennai has treated from inception till April 2015 13,336 Out-patients and 642 In-patients have undergone Minimal Access Surgeries like Appendicectomy, Cholecystectomy, Adhesiolysis, Ovarian Cystectomy, Diagnostic Laparoscopy, Inguinal Hernia and Ventral Hernia Repair, Orchiopexy, Varicocelectomy and Solid Organ Removal, Gastro-Jejunostomy etc. with patients experiencing less pain, shorter hospital stay, better wound results and returning to work early.

TamilNadu has become the First State in India, to start Post-doctoral Fellowship Course to train surgeons in latest advancements in Minimal Access Surgery in a Govt. Medical College at Madras Medical College for 2 candidates every year since 2014 and the course is accredited to the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University and at present 2 service candidates are undergoing fellowship training.

Minimal Access Surgeries have been included in the approved List of surgeries of the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme along with the use of high cost Bilayered Meshes for Hernia Repair to the benefit of large number of patients seeking treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai.

The Minimal Access Surgery Department runs its Outpatient services from 9.30 am to 12 noon from Monday to Friday with 2 Operation Theatre days and offers Upper / Lower GI Endoscopy services.
